Here are some top tips to instantly update your wardrobe for cooler weather and keep you on the cutting edge of fashion this Autumn.

The eighties are back!

This season's new silhouette is all about super shoulders (Dorothy Perkins has some great examples) and belted waistbands. Clash colours to your hearts content with vivid shades of pink, orange and blue. For a younger and grungier day time look, make like Ashish and mix up your prints with faded denim jeans and a leather jacket.

Metallics are huge

To achieve this look without looking like a disco ball, mix in other shades and fabrics to add depth and texture: try a luxe silver skirt with charcoal grey tights, ankle boots and a chunky knit, or mix shades of gold and bronze with khakis, mustard and brown for a luxurious autumnal feel.

Not feeling brave enough? Check out Marks & Spencer for a more subtle approach with a metallic statement necklace or handbag.

Prints are big news

Classic hounds tooth is a favourite choice of designers Alexander McQueen, Moschino and Preen this season, and is a trend that works really well in the workplace.

Try a new combo

For a younger look, step away from the black and white combo and mix pink and black instead.

Go traditional

For a more mature way to wear this trend, choose traditional shapes like a pencil skirt or a cropped jacket and mix with classic shades of red and black.

Animal prints are back

It is trend that just won't go away. Take Dolce and Gabbana's lead and keep it simple with a leopard print handbag, or follow Oscar De La Renta and choose a full evening look. If the high street's more your style, head to Dune for some leopard-print goodies.

Treat yourself to a gorgeous blouse

More feminine than the structured shirt, the blouse can be dressed down for daytime with jeans and boots, worn for work under a suit, or dressed up for evening by wearing it with a skirt and heels.

Leggings

For a young look, take inspiration from Gucci and Topshop Unique and experiment with leather.

Harem pants

Follow Preen and Dior by moving away from the jersey fabrics favoured this summer; instead choose silk for glamorous evening option.

Dinner jackets

As the party season approaches, dinner jackets are a must have. Wear with jeans and heels for evening drinks or toss one over a dress to keep you warm and stylish on your journey to and from a Christmas party. And remember if you're conscious of your upper arms then a dinner jacket is the perfect stylish solution.
