Find the perfect jacket
A gorgeous coat is arguably the most important piece of your
wardrobe this Autumn - plus it's a great way to accentuate the
great shape you've achieved. As the item you wear the most, it
needs to be stylish, comfortable and practical.
Here are some top tips to help you find the right coat to suit
you
Invest in a classic
Don't be too influenced by trend. If you want a coat that will
last you a few seasons, choose a good quality fabric that will keep
its shape and a get it in a classic colour such as camel, grey navy
blue or black.
Add a splash of colour
Hot colours for this season are red, pink and green. You can
brighten up a dark coloured coat (and your mood!) with a corsage,
brooch or brightly coloured scarf! You don't need to break the
bank; have a look in George and Matalan for some penny pinching
styles.
Emphasis your waist with a belt
Belted coats are a great way to show off your new slimmer
figure, and don't be afraid to switch out an existing matching
belt.
Update your wardrobe
Breathe new life into an old favourite by replacing its
buttons.
What's hot
Choose this season's faux fur style or go for a pattern - animal
print and hounds tooth are great options.
Be practical
Think about the purpose of your coat: will you be wearing it
over dresses? Will you be outside for long periods of time? Will
you be wearing your coat for work? The length and style should
reflect your practical needs.
Make sure you buy a coat that suits your body shape and shows
off the fabulous new you to the very best advantage. Here is some
advice on how to make the most of your shape.
If you're pear shaped
- Choose a tailored coat with definition on the shoulders to
balance out your bottom half.
- Choose a coat with a nipped in waist to draw the eye to your
slimmest part.
- Choose a coat that is slightly A-line so that it will skim over
your hips and create a smooth line.
- Avoid coats with flaps on the pockets. They only add bulk
around your hips and make them look bigger than they are.
- Choose a coat with wide lapels to broaden your upper body and
give you a balanced silhouette, have a look in Marks & Spencers
for some on-trend ideas.
- Avoid shorter coats that finish just above or on the bum, since
these only draw attention to your widest part.
- A 3/4 length coat is the best style for you.
If you're apple shaped
- Avoid anything bulky around your midsection - pleats,
gathering and wide belts will only add bulk.
- Choose a coat with a higher waistband to make your
body appear longer and focus the attention away from your
tummy.
- Choose a mid length coat that shows off your
fabulous legs.
If you have a athletic frame
- Go for coats that draw you in at the waist and give the
illusion of curves.
- Double-breasted styles add volume and look great on
athletic frames.
- This season's sculpted styles are a great option, so feel
free to play around with volume!
If you're petite
- Go for shorter styles or 3/4 length; anything longer will swamp
your petite frame.
- Choose a single-breasted coat, since double-breasted styles can
make you look boxy and shorter than you are.
- Choose a straight style that will create a column and elongate
your figure
- Avoid coats with over sized features; large pockets, buttons,
pussybows and funnel necks are a no no! Instead, keep details small
and perfectly in proportion.
If you have a bigger bust
- Go for coats with a v-neck. Anything that buttons
right up to the neck can make you look top heavy.
- Choose collars with a narrow lapel. This will
elongate the bust area and draw the eye down.
- Choose a belted coat that flares at the bottom. This
line will show off your fabulous figure and create a
balanced silhouette. A-line styles, trenches and frock coats
are great options!
- Choose a single-breasted coat - double-breasted styles
will only broaden your top half.
